Other ways to convince the IRS that you are not a hobby, but are really out there working as an artist is to join the guilds, the councils at all the different levels, participate in meetings, workshops, seminars etc. I don't do outdoor shows anymore. I only do the Pewabic Tile shows. I donate tiles to their silent auction. I have worked at the public schools for empty bowls, tile murals with the elementary schools, high school "kids at risk" etc. I was paid by grants that were applied for by the teachers. I claim all of my sales and pay my taxes. My husband's accountant takes care of the paperwork.

I have had "traditional jobs" that put me through college and paid for diapers and formula and hockey, but my non-traditional job has always been clay and that is how I describe it - a non-traditional job.

We recently bought 5 acres in rural Michigan, and I am excited about the possibilities for raku, gas firing, wood firing and upon describing the kiln I want to build to my husband he said "how long do you plan to do this (pottery)?"

I told him it was not what I do it is what I am.
