Surfing with Helen Bates - Pennsylvania - October 27th., 2003

Hi,

I've done very little editing tonight... if there are errors, let me know.

Pennsylvania

-- Margulies, Marge (Philadelphia, PA, USA)

Brilliant colour in monochrome mix and match hand thrown tableware
designs. She writes: "The intent of this work is to create
compositions which, through the use of several separate form elements,
give an impression of unfolding flowers."

-- Janet Lowe (Coil Pots) (Philadelphia, PA, USA)

Trained under Viola Frey, Ken Shores and Toshiko Takaezu
Black and white coiled functional pots, sometimes colour as part of
design. White earthenware.

-- Adamstown Antique Gallery (Online) (Denver, PA , USA)

Antique Pottery General (Some great pieces)

-- "A Gathering of Peers" (The Clay Studio) (Philadelphia, PA, USA)

(Robert Winokur students)

-- Syd Carpenter (Swarthmore, PA, USA)

(Assistant Professor of Studio Art at Swarthmore College)

-- Elyse Saperstein (Deceased) (Philadelphia, PA, USA)
I was following up on a mention of Elyse Saperstein when I found she was
not on the 2003 Shawnee State University Faculty list. I found the
reason in this press release from SSU that she had died early in 2003:

Shawnee State University home page: (Portland, OH, USA)
Her death was in fact mentioned on Clayart in January 2003, but I missed
this at the time. Prior to her death she had a show at the Philadelphia
Airport Gallery:
http://www.phl.org/art/saperstein.html
and at the Delmano gallery:

and at the Museum of Nebraska:

-- Allison McGowan (McGowan Porcelain) (Phoenixville, PA, USA)

"Bag Pots" and other distinctively formed and decorated functional ware.

--Gary Holt:

McGowan is a new clay artist for me, but maybe not for Clayarter , whom
she lists in her "Links" page. In his "Gallery" section, Gary has three
photos of one of a kind porcelain ware he has decorated at the bisque
stage using the difficult soluble salts method.

-- Peter Cunicelli (Philadelphia, PA, USA)

Peter is a gifted student of McGowan's.

New Jersey

-- Sara Ostrov (Sara Pots) (Neptune, NJ, USA)

Potter and former ceramics professor at Monmouth University, Sara Ostrov
makes wheel thrown and various other hand building techniques. Her
well-made high temperature functional dinnerware and related pieces are
hand painted using underglaze stains or colored clays. The colour
treatments vary from more muted plant tones to bright fruit colours. The
pieces look as if they would be satisfying to hold and use. Sara also
makes elegant free-form porcelain jewellery.

New York

-- Lamel, Howard (Artisan Street Com) ( New York, NY, USA)

-- Jim & Shirl Parmentier Clay Baskets (Fly Creek, NY, USA)

Meticulous work, very good design by this husband and wife team of
potters.

-- Boston Valley Terra Cotta (Orchard Park, NY, USA)

Boston Valley Terra Cotta for Architectural Terra Cotta Manufacturing
and Services.

-- The Teahouse Project at Cornell University (Designer Marc P. Keane)

The Teahouse Project at Cornell University is a seminar run by Marc P.
Keane, garden designer from Kyoto, Japan and the Halprin Fellow in the
Dept. of Landscape Architecture. For the pottery aspect, see the images
of pinched tea bowl construction, click "The Teahouse", then "tea
bowls." Jerry Donovan's advanced pottery class at SUNY Cortland was
responsible for creating the bowls. (I'm unsure why there are flames
inside this kiln, unless it is firing with wood?)

-- "clay.alfred.edu" (Alfred, NY, USA)
(The NY State College of Ceramics at Alfred University)
(Database of last 10 years' MFA grads)
(Other pages in the Clay Alfred Edu site have yet to be completed:

In the Database is Forrest Snyder (Bennington College)(Bennington, VT, USA)

(Clayarter, and Editor of "Critical Ceramics")
