iron reds -- thick or thin?

Has anyone noticed a difference in the results of iron red glazes (cone 10
reduction) between a thick application and a thin one? I have done some work
with Ohata red and found in some cases it comes out a nice orange/red
crystally look and other times more of a dark brown with black specs all
over. The firing schedule is usually the same, heavy reduction with a
considerable period of oxidation from cone 9 to the end. (I have found that
when i was firing in a lighter reduction at one point the color response was
a little nicer, but still i have had good results under the previous
schedule). Anyway, i think i have found that the thinner-glazed pieces have
a nicer color that tends more toward the red, and that pieces glazed very
thickly have a more dull look. But i am still testing this theory some more
before i can really conclude that. Has anyone else found this to be true?
