Thanks to everyone who sent me ideas to try....
I spent the day in the studio trying out the tips and what seemed to work
best was:
#1 putting a little bit of vinegar in the throwing water/slurry - boy, that
really makes it slippery!
#2 throwing with the wheel revolving much, much more slowly than I had been
doing - it is amazing the difference that this makes! I had always spun the
wheel quite fast, and majorly slowing it down made a big difference in the
amount of water/slurry needed to keep my fingertips from snagging.
it's amazing the difference doing these two things makes!
