Hi, am looking for ideas on wood firing glaze or slips, I am studing at
college in Australia. I have used glaze earlier this year, for the next
firing and the last for this year I am using a dark body clay known here
as "Blackwattle Woodfire Clay". I have made several pots for this last
firing and have used rutile oxide both in an eartherware or stoneware body
as slip for some, others i have used just the rutile oxide in water and
sprayed or brushed it on. I also brushed it on a white stoneware body
vessel.
Anyway, anyone got some good info on oxides, processes, bodies, glazes for
wood firing.

Thanks, Sam & Diana

Hi Sam,
You could try some glazes based on felspar or nepheline syenite - the
'shino' family of glazes. They are always good value.
Glazes with high lime (whiting) content tend to bleach out, so that
there is very little wood fired effect. The only sure way to find out
what you like best on your work is to try a wide range of glaze tests
in the kiln and go from there - make up your own mind.

If you are interested in wood firing, you might be interested in my
wood firing books? What kind of kiln is it that you are firing?
Best wishes
