low fire gunmetal

To all the "Glaze Wizards" out there,

I have been looking (unsuccessfully) for a low fire gunmetal glaze
recipe. I've found it for ^5 but I have no idea how to make a ^5 glaze
into a ^06-04 glaze, and from what I've heard it would be an entirely
new glaze. I found out I can buy it from Laguna in 50# lots but I
don't want that much. Anybody want to share their recipe?

Thanks,
Libby

Libby, you can buy gunmetal glaze at the local greenware stores for cone
06-05 firing. Im sure it comes in pints and the smaller jars.. I have used it
and had good results. I don't think it would be food-safe though..

Hello Libbi,
Take your favorite low fire glaze: into 3 jars, 100 grams each.
Jar one with 8% copper oxide
Jar two with 11 %
The third with 14& copper oxide. Than choose.
You will have the gunmetal not foodsafe of course but without
manganese.

The only gunmetal I've used.

Gun Metal - A raku glaze.
Rich Oranges
Greens & Purples Cone 06-05 (1850-1875F in my test)

Gerstley Borate
3 parts

Nepheline Syenite
1 part

Copper Carbonate
3 parts

Red Iron Oxide
3 parts

This was a nice fat smooth semi gloss glaze that turned out well in the
second attempt of mine....it's a nice rusty colored subtle copper twinkle
with lots of darks to keep it tame. very similar to the look of old
gunmetal.
This Glaze HAS TO be pulled very quickly from the kiln to reduction chamber
in order for the colors to work. But work well when done right.
I did not ever get greens however I did not let any oxidation occur. It was
not an attractive glaze in oxidation on the first attempt.

Wesley,
Thanks. I do plan to do some raku soon and I'll keep this in my files.
I'm really wanting an oxidation gunmetal. I've been given some things
to try so maybe I've already got what I want.

Thanks again,
Libby Krause
