kiln vent question

updated thu 24 nov 11

Tamara Schulz on thu 6 nov 03

I currently have a 10 cf top-loading Crucible updraft kiln with a swing away
vent-a-hood system in my studio. However, I plan to move the kiln to my
house where it will be located outside. I am planning to construct a three
sided shelter to protect against wind/typhoons. Soooo, do I still need the
vent? If ventilation is adequate and I forgo the vent, how will the firing
be affected?
Thank you for any advice.

I need a new hose for my Vent-Sure kiln vent on my L&L kiln. Do I need to
buy the $31 hose from L&L or can I buy a metal drier hose at the local home
improvement store? Or is there a place on-line that sells parts for the
Vent-Sure? I need to get a replacement quickly as mine has deteriorated &
came apart in pieces.

Thanks.

I had to replace mine twice (over a 9 year period) and I just went to
the home improvement store. I think that the L&L replacement
includes the metal plate assembly that screws onto the bottom of the
kiln. I doubt very much that needs replacing. Take a piece of the
old hose with you so that you don't come home with the wrong diameter
- as I did the first time.

Hi Sue=3D2C

I suppose you could save a few bucks on a generic dryer venting tube=3D2C b=

will it fit up properly?

A leaky vent is worse than no vent because of the misplaced "trust in it fa=

In the original question Sue asked if she had to replace flexible vent tube=
=3D
with one from the original seller.

I would suggest to replace the flexible vent with solid galvanized pipe.
At school our kilns are fired a lot and the flex vent supplied by the kiln =
=3D
maker did not last a year before rotting out from fumes/moisture created du=
=3D
ring bisque firings. They were replaced with solid vent lines that will las=
=3D
t much longer.

"You pays whats you gets for"

...cheap solutions are cheap...inexpensive and will not last long.

just my experience .

galvanized pipe should last longer.... than flex-plastic pipe.... right?

stainless steel would cost more but last a LONG time...

so

go cheap...get the cheap solution for a short time..

what do you want? a cheap solution or a soution that will last for years? =
replace in a year or two or for the long haul?

decide.

some potters always look for the cheap solution to problems...why???

cheap shelves...cheap kilns?... cheap glazes? cheap pots?

cheap is good?

I do not agree.

performance proves itself.

lets see....21 $ vs 30 dollars

hmmm

David I usually agree with what you write but this seems like
nonsense to me. What is involved here is a length of accordion
aluminum tubing, its the same tubing whether you buy it from L&L
(which is a fine company) or the shop down the street from you. They
will both corrode with time, and leak, and if you pick it up locally
you don't have to pay packing and shipping in addition. When I last
checked L&L was not selling the tubing alone, it came with a plate
assembly (of much heavier metal) that requires you to unscrew and
remove the old plate assembly on your kiln (which almost surely does
not need replacing) and then rescrew and attach the new one. I have
had my kiln for 10 years and the original plate assembly is in fine
shape, its just the aluminum tubing that has to be replaced from time
to time, the original L&L tubing corroded and needed replacing after
a while, and the local appliance store tubing also corroded and
needed replacing after a while. If you want to support L&L buy a
spare thermocouple.
