I am astonished by the selection of spray guns on the harbor freight =
site. Could someone shed some light on what to buy? Having only =
pictures to look at makes me wonder... are the sale ones any good? I =
hate buying by guesswork. Thanks to any and all who can shed light.

Bev, what type of work do you want to do with it? Are you mixing your own
glazes and spraying large areas? Are you doing fine, detailed work? I use a spray
"gun" from Harbor Freight. Its a "central pneumatic #46720" and was an
unbelievable $12.99! I took a Roger Allen workshop last year and this is the spray
gun he uses. With this spray gun I use diluted underglazes. I am including his
website at the bottom of this email so you can see the type of work he does
with this spray gun.

Another thing he recommended was a rock tumbler to use as a ball mill to get
the slips and or glazes fine enough to go through an air gun. I purchased a
$19 little rock tumbler from Harbor Freight and made my own balls from ^10
stoneware and fired to ^10 (asst sizes from 1/4" - 3/4" diam). When I get enough
slip in my water bucket I drain off the top layer of water, pour the slip into
the rock tumbler container with the stoneware balls, add my colorant (already
mixed with a smaller amount of slip), and let the tumbler tumble for a day. I
end up with a very smooth slip that I can use in the air gun or to put in a
slip trailer. I also do this to make quart size quantities of plain slip that I
store in industrial size spice containers and mark the outside with what type
of clay the slip is made from. Then when I am attaching handles or hand
building I can just pour the ready made slip into my little slip bottle with a fine
tip for getting a fine line of slip where I need it.

Hi, Cat,

I was unable to get Roger Allen's website to appear. Is there something
missing?

By the way, I thank you for your great tips on ball milling and spraying.

Thanks,

Charles

Sorry about that Charles! Try this site:
www.chickenfarmartcenter.com

If that doesn't work do a search on Roger Allen Chicken Farm Art Center in
San Angelo, Tx. For some reason the web address I sent didn't come out as I cut
and pasted it in my email.

Hey Cat,

Thanks for posting your message! When my hubby surprised me with one of thoes Harbor Freight rock tumblers my first thought was "how can I use the stones to do mixed media pieces?" Then I was hit with the idea to use the tumbler as a ball mill but was unsure about the whole process. I've just told my hubby that I now need a second one !
Guess I better get off line and try to talk him into it :o) THANKS!!!!!!!!! ( wish me luck!)
Remember everyone, tools are like fishing tackle, you can NEVER have too much or too many!!!! (confessions of a tool-a0holic)
