charles moore asked what kind of store sells etching cream...

joanns, michaels... craft stores.

i first saw it on a tv craft show... folks use it to create frosted
patterns on glass objects.

hi, all.

a few months ago, i asked if anyone had tried etching cream over
glaze-fired pieces.

no one responded that they had... but some folks wanted to know results
if i tried it (sorry for the lousy syntax).

well, i tried it.

bought a jar at local mega craft store, using a 50% coupon... the stuff
isn't cheap.

made test tiles for 5 glazes... 2 tiles each.

took 1 set of tiles & used a sand blaster on them... dusting the tiles
to get a frosted appearance.

took other set of tiles and applied etching cream to 1/2.

showed the results to the mfa kids at school.

well, folks were really impressed...

the tiles looked virtually identical to the naked eye.

main difference was the feel of the surface. not surprisingly, the
etched piece had a much smoother surface.

folks were interested in the ability to easily mask off areas & apply
the cream.

so. for once, an experiment went well.

home after a day trip to ithaca, dodging downed trees & flying trash

moosewood. yum.

During the customized Van craze many years ago - I made a lot of extra money "etching" van side windows with victorian patterns. Used patterns made of silk screen paper, or masking tape, with the etching solution. material is sort of a creamy solution and I don't believe harmful to much except glass. Try a glass shop or perhaps a stained glass supply for the material. It is sort of fun to work with. Sam in Daly City
