21st cent. ceramics/columbus show

Echoing Vince's recent post - definitely see this show
if at all possible. It's worth the effort. Also,if
you are a collector, there is an appalling amount of
excellent work at fair prices still UNsold.

If you can't get to Columbus -- the whole show,
actually the whole book, is on-line starting with
www.CCAD.edu. This is a generous gift to us all
wherever we are. Most of the essays are worth reading,
ranging from excellent to same-old-same-old whine.

A note of caution if you are considering ordering the
catalog - it is not up to the level of the work in the
show. A significant proportion of the color
reproduction went terribly off.

that was not the best of what they are doing
currently, and that is a real shame. I wonder why
they would embarass themselves that way, especially in
a major national venue that is documented in a
significant color catalog?<

Judging from this work, I more pointedly had to ask
why they were invited into the show at all?? Some of
the work simply did not rate being there particularly
in view of Vince's list of artists not represented.
But most of the work is excellent.

>If one thinks of this as some representation of the
most important American and Canadian ceramic artists
of the early 21st century, then there were many
obvious ommissions.<

One can't know why particular artists were not in the
show - perhaps they were invited and simply couldn't
send work.

Karen -
That is a very sad fact. They were terribly rushed, trying to re-do the
scans, and simply ran out of time. But they only did a limited run, and are
thinking of printing more. If they do, they may redo all the poor scans.
In some cases the artists sent poor slides, and nothing can be done about
those. But re-scans would improve most of the poorer images. Anyone
concerned about this should email Bill Jones at ACerS and encourage him to
print more volumes. This is such an important show, and the catalog will
remain a very important reference, but much more so if it is reprinted with
better images.

With the significant funding they got for this exhibition, it is beyond my
comprehension why they did not raise a little more to hire a good
photographer to shoot every piece in the show on-site. With that many major
Canadian and American ceramic works all assembled in one place, it is a
terrible opportunity missed if that is not done.

Thanks for the "heads-up" on the quality of the catalog. I was delighted to
see this show, and leafed through the catalog which is $ 50. If it is
reprinted, with better images, I would consider buying it.

Anyone who can should, however, get to Columbus for the show.

Sorry for the ignorance.... but,

Exactly when and where is the Columbus Show. I assume the thread has been
about an upcoming (hopefully it's not over already) show in Colubus, OHIO.
Could someone let me know the dates, and the location in Columbus?

Thanks,

Karen, Vince......

Thanks for the heads up. I will be in Canton, Ohio on Tuesday, November 25
and now plan to travel to Columbus on the 26th to see this show. I was
wondering what I was going to do with that Wednesday before Thanksgiving!

Hi:

I hope Vince is correct about rescans of bad images in the book that
represents the pieces present in the 21st CC show. My work came out very
"off color" even though I sent very good 2 1/4 transparencies. Some of
the work in the book looks very good though. I hope my photographer
doesn't see this.

I'm having trouble understanding why things were so rushed. The logistics
for the show were very well arranged and we all had plenty of time to do
what we had to do with respect to sending slides and other written
material. The timeline was conveyed very well and in a timely fashion. I
like being in shows like that. You know what's expected and when they want
everything and you have plenty of time to do everything. You follow the
timeline and you're done. The only exception to this was the book. The
book was almost an afterthought. We received emails about doing some
writing for the book and had about 4-5 days to do that stuff and get it
sent back via email. I had something in mind to write about but I also had
a firm deadline for another show and couldn't leave my work in the studio
to write. I didn't want to make some half assed attempt at doing something
in the evenings when I was worn out from making pots. That's my excuse.

Anyway, I hope the book can be redone in terms of the visuals for the
benefit of those who couldn't attend the show in person. I'm one of those
people. I will buy another book if they rescan the images, no question
about it.

regards, Craig Martell Hopewell, Oregon

The exhibition "21st Century Ceramics in the United States and Canada" is at
the Canzani Center Gallery of the Columbus College of Art and Design in
Columbus, Ohio. It runs through December 7th. As is so often the case, all
of this information is so easily found by just entering the name of the
exhibition or "CCAD" in a search engine.
