updated wed 19 nov 03

i have attacked a computer and totally rebuilt
it. what fun.

the power plant blew out on sharlene's computer.
everything went black. lost the floppy drive and
hard drive.
was going to throw it away..then thought.
`no, take it all apart, everything out.
sort through it. see what has power left.`

went to my buddy at the used computer supply
place. asked if i could go through the dead computer
pile. `hell yes, take what you want, it is all goin in
the dumpster on monday.`

found a power supply. had three old floppy drives for other
computers, found a cd burner that i took out of a dead computer.
had three old hard drives...10 gig..some memory sticks.

well, i put that entire thing back together..had to drill and tap
some holes for new screws. mother board was fine.
got it all together..and she stared right up.
had to talk to my tech friend for about two minutes..gave
me a hint. and, installed win 98 second.
works like a charm. pentium about 500.
now, that is fun.

Dear Mel,

How smart of you that you can utilize them !

I was at a local thrift store and noticed a huge plie of donated computers
[probably a company updating ot out of business] that were fairly recent with
color printers and scanners[to give a timeline clue] and a mountain of
monitord[many IBM] a fellow was scavenging them from the free pile to the yune of a
pickup load full.

.I snagged a monitor

The scavenger said the charity thrifts are getting undunated and have no
market for them and have to pay to take them to the landfill. They have a
number of toxic materials in their manufacture so this is adding to the phones,
faxes and typewriters and such that no one has time nor marlets to salvage
in our modern economy.

The amount of usable stuff thrown away tha still could be used if someone
couldrehab[not all even needs work] is shameful with so many without,
Keep it up,MEL AND ALL RECYCLERS.

Several computer companies have recycle services in place now that will =
give
you a small credit for the components in question and provide a pickup
service, too. Dell and HP are on the bandwagon, and I believe IBM and
Gateway might be, too, but I am not certain. Here is the link for the HP
recycle info:

long.)

Careful, mel. Next thing you know, you'll start wearing glasses with tape on the bows and nosepiece, a plastic pocket protector, and high-water geek pants. And you'll have to start a new website with "mel's computer and bait shop."

Good job!

I keep pointing out that potters are among the most self-sufficient folks I know. Got a mechanical problem? Take it to a potter. Chances are the mud slinger will know how to fix it. And a lot cheaper than Honest Herb's Fixit Shoppe.
