Hi June,
I tried both your email addresses and both bounced back so I am going via
Clayart.

T'was I who sent your the email about one of your glazes and you deleted if
before you read it. Here's a resend:

I wondered if anyone ever gives you feedback about your glazes on your web
site. I tried your #7473,calcium eutectic type glaze (your group 4, ^6
glazes) with 4% rutile and 4% tin and got a pink blush colour, by Mabeline
;-) Then I added more rutile to bring it to 8% rutile with the 4% tin and
the colour lightened to pale peach, by Cover Girl. Then I decided to add
6% RIO and WOW, I got a matt faintly speckled tan with pumpkin orange breaks
on both a white stoneware clay and on another with some iron in it.
Stupendous.
Thanks for being so generous with your knowledge.
Best regards,
Carol

Dear Carol,

In that 7474V3 base, 8 rutile 4 tin oxide should give a deep reddish orange.
Are you using light rutile? My tests used ceramic grade rutile which looks a
bit darker than light rutile. I also fired down and I think that makes a
difference in the depth of color.
I made the test with another friends rutile and it came out a bit lighter;
and I didn't fire down as long in that firing. Ababi also tested the 8 rutile 4
tin version and got a deep orange. I think he has a picture of it on his web
site.
Also, I always make a test batch of at least 200 grams to get a better
accuracy. Weighing out small percentages of oxides in only 100 gram batches opens
the way for a less accurate batch, I think.
You might want to try 1 copper carb in that base as well as in the other cone
6 calcium eutectic glaze. It comes out a gorgeous satin, buttery light
celadon -- a pale bluish celadon with a single dip and a bit deeper with a second or
longer dip. There's a picture of it in the cone 6 test tile pages.
I'll have to try the iron version you posted next time I do cone 6 trials. It
sounds like something I'd like. Right now I'm working on batching and testing
Cone ten glazes, getting ready for a cone 10 reduction firing.
Sorry about the email. I shut the ShambhalaPottery@aol.com address down for a
day, hoping to stop some virus messages (someone stole my address and was
using it to send out viruses, that's why I changed my clayart email to
Clayteach@aol.com). I checked the Clayteach address and it isn't blocked, so I don't
know why you couldn't get through. You might want to try to send a quick test
message and I'll let you know if I get it.

Warm regards,
June
