Is there a potters cleansing ritual or chant I can do to overcome this malady.

Barbara,

Just a guess, but I'd say you've got a mild case of "Clay Possession." Evil demons have taken over some of the more autonomic activities of your pottery creations, disrupting the creative Muse. It's not a "failure" as such, just a pottery-poltergeist, so to speak.

For exorcise of the demons, you may try to switch to handbuilding for a while, or teach a class. :o)

Actually, I find that sometimes, my creative Muse is off helping some other poor slob and I can't even make a mess. Time will cure the problem. Meanwhile, look at this event as an opportunity for personal growth. Trite, but true...

With warm regards,

I am mentally deficient when it comes to this piece of equipment. Can't do it. End up with a mess or a flying pot whenever I try. I failed giffin grip. I also failed rock with Linda and Charlie Riggs at Laloba. I even failed golf in college. But then If it gets much beyond a metal needle, knife or piece of plumbers pipe or sculptor's thumb most "potters tools" become WMDs in my hands and I become the destructor. Go figure. Is there a potters cleansing ritual or chant I can do to overcome this malady.

Hi Barbara,

There is at least a small chance your wheel is simply going the wrong
direction for the grip you have. They do have models for both
clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation. The action of the wheel
turning should act to tighten the grip on the pot, not loosen it.

John

Hi Barbra!

Have you tried chanting to "the Gods" (the wheel, clay gods of course) Try this:
Sit in the lotus position ( or whatever your body says passes for one) Hands on the knees , palms up, thumb & middle finger touching and chant : Oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh please don't let me screw this one up!
repeat as many times as necessary untill your sure "The Gods" have heard you & are going to take pity in you & help out. Or The're just going to help out so you shut up & leave them alone. in any case mission accomplished. If THIS doesn't work then all I can tell you is throw on some AC/DC (the girls got rhythm) and talk to my little friend Jose Cuervo (just a LITTLE talk, two at the most) then if you still can't do anything A: you certainly don't mind as much. & B: you can always blame it on Jose! OLE! Speaking for myself ONLY I sometimes find that sometimes you get "the bear" & sometimes "the bear" gets you & all you can do is walk away and start up again the next day. Frustration has ruined more of my pots & things than I can count! LOTS of luck!!!
