For a number of years I have had a problem with firing my 10 cu ft =
kiln during the summer months. The firings have taken longer and the =
copper red glazes do not reduce properly. We have inquired of the gas =
company a number of times as to what was different about the gas. =
Finally we have found someone who has explained that they buy two =
different types of gas. One is the traditional oil field gas, the other =
is called coal seam gas from northeastern Wyoming. The coal seam gas =
has several problems as it comes out of the ground (but is apparently =
much less expensive) First they have to strip out an excess of CO-2 and =
then because the resulting product has too low a flash point for safety =
they add nitrogen. While they describe blending the two types of gas =
before commercial distribution, it seems that there is a seasonal change =
in that blend. The addition of the nitrogen seems to be the firing =
culprit in both the extended time and the glaze problems during the =
summer months.
