unfired paperclay + plasticity

Once I used thinned porcelienes and acrylics as watercolours on unfired paper clay and sprayed the heck out of it on all surfaces with clear matte and satin acyrlics and it has held up indoors fine as a "sample" piece, but I simply don't care for the finish. Someday if I get reinterested may try it.

I agree wholeheartedly that many people use a plastic clay for a handbuilt form that doesn't need it. However if making a curvy undulating small form that is only 1/4" thick it's still better than a really open body like Laguna's buff sculpture. However my students have all lessened the cracking and warping on boxes tiles and large curved unsupported surfaces by using buff sculpture (laguna) or a cone ten amador fired to only 5-6.

In order to end up with a surface that is smoother than the heavily grogged open body clay, like buff sculpture, we have been coating the unfired piece with slip or even white terra sig for firings up to 5-6. And red or black terra sig for lower fire oxidation, saggar or raku.
It is very successful.
