Hi Everyone,
I am new to the list and need your help.
The Pinnell Stontium White glaze I am using is crazing on the clay body I use which is the Tucker's Sculpture Clay. I fire to cone 6 in oxidation. I absolutely love the look and feel of this glaze for my sculptural work. The finish reminds me of weathered shells on the beach. I tested many other whites and nothing comes close. I've read that I might be able to stop the crazing if I a) increased the silica b) decreased the feldspar or 3) decreased any other material containng soda or potash.
the receipe I use is:
Pinnell Strontium Matt - White
Lithium Carb.......1
Strontium Carb...20
Neph Sy.....60
Ball Clay om4...10
Flint.....9
adding:
Titanium Diox...5
Bentonite.....2
I would greatly appreciate any advise you could share.
Warm regards, Laura in North East PA

Hi Laura,
I just may have the answer to this one - I'm nor surprised that glaze is
crazing - and I know what it takes to stop it on the White Sculpture clay.
I made that body in the 60's as a white raku body and a cone 10 sculpture
body - still a good seller - based on porcelain but with grog.
Get yourself some spodumene and do a test batch (1000 grams) and try this.
It's not easy to predict expansions of matte type glazes but worth a try.
Lithiun Carb 1.0
Strontium - 20.0
Spodunene - 40.0
Neph Sy - 20.0
OM4 - 10.0
Silica - 9.0
Total 100.0
Let us know how it works please - RR

Dear Ron,
Thank you so much for the advise on ways I might be able to correct the crazing found when using Pinnell Strontium White on Tuckers sculpture clay. I will follow your recommendation and post the results.
