powdered illmenite substitution?????

updated mon 1 dec 03

Has anyone tried replacing powdered illmenite with half black iron and half
rutile? It seems that powdered illmenite has disappeared from the market and
I'm hoping another user has found a suitable combination replacement.
I've introduced the old "Moonlite" glaze to a group I'm working with and they
love the glaze, but I haven't been able to find any powdered illmenite
anywhere. :-(

Thanks!

June,

here is a typical analysis of ilmenite from a mine located in
northeastern Quebec:

QIT stands for Quebec Iron & Titanium, it owns an ilmenite mine in
northeastern Quebec;

the ore is shipped to Tracy where it is processed to titanium dioxide slags,
iron pigs,

steel billets and steel auto parts.

A typical analysis is as such :

SiO2 10.54

Al2O3 6.70

Fe2O3 32.72

TiO2 25.69

CaO 2.06

MgO 3.76

FeO 12.7

Imputities 5.66

Total 100

It is the black iron oxide that gives the black colour to this material, not
the red

even if there is more red iron oxide.

Here is a substitution if you only have red iron oxide in your glaze lab,

for 1% of the stuff:

Rutile .260

Fe2O3 .450

EPK .170

Dolomite .100

Silica .020

Total 1.000

Hi June,

In the com. coll. I worked at we used a ^10 glaze called " moonlight". When I left I found I hadn't copied it like I thought I had. It also was an "older" glaze. Is there any way I could talk you into sending me your glaze recipe? directly or posted here whatever you prefer, I would be forever gratefull & willing to trade any of my ^ 6 glazes or my up to ^10
underglaze recipes. Also if you try Seattle Pottery Supply ( they are online) you should have no problem getting the powdered stuff. That's where I get mine. May you be blessed with students who clean up after themselves. ( on their own) :o}
Thank you soooooooooooooooo much & have a good one!!!
