John, John, Bill, Ron, Ababi and Dave,

Thank you all for your coments regarding water to materials ratios. Now for another problem. John H and RR, this may be of particular interest to you since the glaze I am using is Glossy Base 2 from your book.

A while back I posted about this glaze pinholing on me with the addition of 5% tin though the glaze in its simplest form, clear, was perfect. As you know I just finished my first round of tests. I used 4 claybodies and 9 different oxides/carbonates in 5% additions to the base glaze. (That is to say, 9 batches of the base with 5% of Iron, or 5% cobalt, or 5% tin, etc.) Almost without exception, this glaze pinholed in all of my tests, especially where it was applied thickly. Each tile was triple dipped so I could see the glaze in 3 thicknesses.

The biggest difference between this test and the original is that I increased my soak from 20 minutes to an hour. Most of the suggestions from my first round of questions regarding this problem led me to this change. The only other pertinent information I can offer is telling of my status as a beginner. I am firing to cone 6 (Elec) but in my excitement I purchades cones 4, 5, and 6. No #7. So when I fire, I get cone 6 to about 3 o'clock, but I don't have any idea what my non-existant cone 7 would be at.

Well, I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts about this and thanks again.

Hi Paul,

What are you bisquing to? If it is 06, try O4. Second, this glaze is
close to being difficult to melt at cone 6, so I might try adding an
additional 5% and 10% frit. It sounds like you need to get the glaze
just a bit more fluid.

Regards,

John

Hi John,
So the frit you suggest adding is in addition to the 100% total? That is to say, mix up a 200 gr batch and then add 5% more frit plus oxides? Or are you saying to reformulate the glaze with extra 5-10% included in the build up to 100?
