I had the most wonderful learning experience!
The Japan society had a Noguchi show where he as a sculptor had worked with
the Japanese potters. The show also showed his influence on young potters
in Japan "the crawl through the mud society".This show seems from the
description to be the same as the one that was in Washington DC.
It is really a treat and inspiring. I felt like I had been given a present
when I left......The only thing that was irritating is that I couldn't pick
anything up or touch the wonderful raw clay surfaces-Does that seem fair to
you?
The next Day I went to the Metropolitan Museum and visited a show on
Japanese art that featured beautiful painted screens and lots of Oribe and
Shinos.....So many questions answered and so many more formed. So easy to
see where some of the American potters were influenced from.
Ended up exhausted but just lucky enought to visit Chinese Jun Blue,Hare's
fur ,and oil spot bowls, and peach bloom vases on my way down the stairs.
I am indeed a rich woman now.The two shows in combination are awesome!
It's amazing the difference in the ceramic aesthetic between some Japanese
and Chinese pots. And Japanese teabowls are a whole lot bigger than one
would think-kind of like the monster coffee mugs I like.
Hope everyone had as wonderful a Thanksgiving as I did
