For the past two years, I have been part of a three person group working
on a translation of a Japanese language book by Furutani Michio (an
acknowledged modern master of anagama kilns) called: Anagama: Building
Kilns and Firing.
The entire book is devoted to one thing, teaching the skills necessary
to build and fire an anagama. It is quite simply, the most complete, if
not the only, English language "how-to" book for anagama kilns.
I personally used the information in this book as the basis for my own
kiln, and I've put up a web site showing its construction and firing.
If you are interested in seeing how I went about things, or are
interested in a copy of the translation itself, feel free to drop by:

ps - the web site is basically "home brewed", please let me know if you
have any technical issues.

Hello Everyone: I just got my copy of Anagama: Building Kilns and Firing
a Japanese Book by Furutani Michio and the English translation by Shiori
Noro, Odin Maxwell, and Dick Lehman. I can't put the book down.
This is the most complete book on anagama kilns that I have yet to come
across. Noro, Maxwell, and Lehman have done a great service to the
pottery community by putting together this translation.
Michio writes from a wide and deep range of experience on wood firing.
His instructions on how to build, load and fire an anagama kiln are a
wealth of gems that ring true. Unlike authors who pick a subject and
then gather information and then write and edit. Michio writes from
personal knowledge after the fact. He knows what not to do as well as
what to do.
If you fire with wood, I highly recommend this book.
Thank- you Odin.
Cheers
