"CHINESE CLAYART" is a newsletter emailed bi-monthly to professional
artists, curators, collectors, writers, experts, educators and students in
the ceramic field, who want to know about ceramic art in China and things
related. This newsletter will be a bridge between China and Western

TRAVEL
China Ceramic Cultural Travel and Exchange
Credits Available for Students
June 2-19 (18 days), 2004. Cities include Beijing, Xi’an, Jingdezhen,
Yixing, and Shanghai.
Fee: $2450 for early birds - first 6 signed-up participants (regular price
is $3,200). The fee includes international round-trip airfare, ground
transportation, tour guide, three meals a day, tickets and lodging (we offer
first class train travel, three-star hotels, and the best services).

participants.
The Chinese Ceramic Art Council, USA, and The University of Illinois at
Springfield are working together for the China trip of June 2004. Associate
Professor Emeritus Bob Dixon is a veteran of travel in China. He has
participated in the International Wood Firing Conferences in Foshan on three
occasions and traveled to Qingdao, Beijing, Jingdezhen, Hong Kong and
Shanghai, with visits to many other areas. Professor Dixon will help
organize through his university a group that will go on this tour. His
university offers up to 4 credit hours and one can take the tour for credit
or no credit through his university.

The University of Illinois at Springfield is one of three U of I campuses
and is located on 746 picturesque acres in the state capital of Illinois.
UIS is a small, public liberal arts university where faculty members are
teacher-scholars and the average class size is 15. UIS offers 40 degree
programs -- 20 bachelor's, 19 master's, and the Doctorate of Public
Administration. UIS has a special mission in public affairs and service and
is known for extraordinary internships, a wireless campus, extensive online
offerings, and a commitment to teaching excellence. Enrollment is 4,574
(fall 2003).

ACTIVITIES
Yixing Ceramic Art Delegation will come to Indianapolis, March 2004
Another Chinese Ceramic Art Delegation is coming to visit the US, and
participate in the NCECA conference. Within the group, two are members of
the elite National Masters of Arts and Crafts. Their names are Wang Yin-Xian
and Tan Quan-Hai. The Chinese Ceramic Art Council, USA, will hold a teapot
exhibition in the Clayground, San Jose, California, and a slide lecture and
teapot workshop will be available at the same-time. Please watch for details
in our next newsletter.

EXHIBITIONS
Yixing Ceramic Art Traveling Exhibition, USA, 2003-2004
Since March 2003, the Yixing Ceramic Art Traveling Exhibition has been on
display at the Clayground, Cupertino, CA; New London Art Center, New London,
MN; and d. p. Fong Gallery, San Jose, CA. In 2004, the exhibit will move to
the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco:

The Chinese Ceramic Art Council, USA, and the Ceramic Art Branch of the Art
and Craft Association of Jiangsu Province, China, are working together to
host the Yixing Ceramic Art Traveling Exhibition, USA, 2003-2004. The
contents of the show will be about 50 pieces of smaller sizes done by the
most talented, well-known Chinese clay artists, and most of the art works
will be Zisha (un-glazed brownish stoneware) teapots.

Juror
Guangzhen "Po" Zhou is a ceramic artist, writer and director of the Chinese
Ceramic Art Council. Mr. Zhou received his Master of Arts from the
University of Minnesota-Duluth and his Master of Fine Arts degree from San
Jose State University, San Jose, California. He is the author of over fifty
articles in both Chinese and English. He has been instrumental in the
exchange of ideas between the Chinese and American ceramics communities.
Eligibility
This competition is open to all artists worldwide, over the age of 18. All
entries must be ceramic teapots completed by the artist within the last
three years. The body of the pot, excluding handles, spouts, and feet,
shall not exceed 4 inches x 4 inches x 4 inches (10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm). Up
to three entries may be submitted by each artist.
Entry Fee
A non-refundable fee of $25 per entry must be received by the entry
deadline. Payment should be made payable to “Saddleback College Foundation”
in the form of a check or money order.
Entry Procedure
Entrants may submit up to three teapots. Selections will be made from 35 mm
slides or digital images. Two slides or digital images will be accepted for
each work. Please submit digital images as *.jpg files, maximum dimensions 5
inches by 8 inches at 300 dpi. Both slides and digital media must be
labeled with artist’s name and title of work. If slides are to be returned,
a SASE must be provided by the artist. Saddleback College Art Gallery
reserves the right to use images in promotional materials and catalogue.
The gallery reserves the right to reject any work that differs from the
slide of digital image.
All entries, including two slides, entry fee and entry form, must be
received by January 9, 2004. These should be sent to:

Entry Acceptance
Letters for accepted entries will be mailed on January 19, 2004. Email will
also be used, if an email address is provided on the entry form.
Instructions for shipping and hand delivery will be included in this letter.
A $5 fee will be charged for works that are to be shipped back to the
artist.
Awards and Sales
Awards will total over $4000.
Best of Show: Trip to China in Summer 2004.
This trip is organized by Chinese Ceramic Art Council, USA. Details are
available on their website (www.chineseclayart.com). This trip includes
visits to Yixing, Xian, and other ceramic art sites in China. The prize
includes most expenses and airfare from California. We reserve the right to
change the itinerary as necessary.
Other prizes include cash awards, gift certificates, and books.
Sale of teapots during the show will be encouraged. A sales commission of
30% will be assessed. Please indicate if a work is for sale and the price
on the entry form.
Liability
Every precaution will be taken for the safety of your work. However,
insurance protection is the responsibility of each artist. Saddleback
College Art Gallery, Saddleback College, its employees, students and
volunteers will not be responsible for loss or damage.
Shipping and Delivery
Do not send teapots until notified of acceptance. Initial judging is based
upon slides and digital images, only. Artists will be responsible for
payment of shipping to Saddleback College Art Gallery. Accepted entries
must be received at the gallery by February 9, 2004. Shipping and hand
delivery information will be provided in the acceptance letter. Entries will
be returned in the shipping containers in which they arrive. Return
shipping is $5, including insurance. This fee must accompany the accepted
pieces. This fee will be waived in cases where the piece will be hand
delivered and picked up at the gallery.
