So, does anyone preheat a kiln overnight?
Low temp...long...slow heat rise...color in the morning
and then go....
Or does everyone rise early and go for it
full blast?

the bamboo...
who ordered and received late
last eve a plant of
green onion bamboo so I planted late
... by moonlight...
now a time of patience to watch it grow
and turn into amazing brushes....
oh...happy day...simple pleasures

I also preheat. With the Mendel kiln, propane and 12 burners, I
overnight with 2 burners on low, kiln is 600-800 F in the morning.
With large greenware, will start preheat in the AM and go overnight. I
also preheat in electric, though with some glaze loads, I only preheat
4-5 hours.

I don't preheat over night ,but because I stack my terra-cotta very
tightly ( pots in side and no shelves) I
have my pilots on for 4 hours . I also have a pilot in the base of the
stack to preheat. The damper is 3/4
closed. When I turn on the mains I turn out the stack pilot and open the
damper this the steam moving.

Hello Karen, and all snoozing kiln watchers,

I get up early and load the Kiln, lighting up at about 10-11 AM. Then I
try to go up 200F (110C) per hour, but always fall a little behind
towards the end. Two AM.

A long time ago sleep overtook me and I overfired. Made some real shiny
stuff. Last firing I fell asleep and woke up "just in time". Everything
came out nicely. Things are getting better, right?

ZZZZZZZZZZZ,

Paul Herman

Glad to be done with the seasonal pot making frenzy.
