transvestite potter wins ......and art basel/miami beach

Hi Marilu

He actually hand builds, coils I think, in earthenware. His forms are
extremely graceful, pretty large, and the surface treatment is beautifully
done. What was so unique, is that he has a way to express thoughts and
feelings rarely expressed by any medium, because of the difficulty. Some
are extremely sensitive subjects, and,"where angels fear to tread" is
appropriate to describe them.

His work is in the Saatchi Gallery in London, along with Chris Offili [
Elephant dung Madonna] Dameon Hirst [the formaldehyde sheep sections] and
other assorted trivia. He is far and away the best artist there, which
pleased me no end. I was a bit saddened to read that both he and the Turner
committee insisted that his win didn't mean that ceramists would be included
in this 'Olympus' of artists. No indeed, they all insisted that this is
most certainly a unique event.

This in a world that is dropping the word 'craft' as in 'California college
of arts and crafts' and I guess in their eyes we are all out there in limbo.
Some of us probably don't even exist ....not craft, not art, shadows like
Indonesian puppets. Just drones. When you realize how much more is
demanded of an artist who works in clay, than a painter, buyer of paint and
canvas, brushes,
it makes me sad to see us so demeaned. I have no intention of putting
painters down. Good ones, that is. They have their own path. But it
really hurts me that our paths which demands so much learning before you can
even begin, is so poorly understood. To be a fine artist in clay, think
about what you need to know.

End of rant.

Thanks for the tip. I had a look at the work. A beautiful vase, well
thrown. He masters decoration regardless the theme.
Great prize for ceramics. About time.

Which brings me to Art Basel/Miami Beach, where I had the opportunity to see "Preserving Beauty" hundreds of gerberas inside pressed glass.

And many miles of art and "art".

A gallery from NY presented about 20 pieces of Picasso's ceramics. A delight to see his great brushstrokes. A jug, a huge anphora, several pressed platters and tiles.

There was another ceramic presence made by a pommie chick and I would love to know what you think about this work. Made from "self firing clay" (...???????)
Please have a look at this site and give me your thoughts.

I'll be waiting...
