I have about twenty bags of chemicals and need to set up storage bins. =
I plan on building the bins from wood unless someone else has ideas. =
Need to store 50lb bags where I can access the open bag. Plan on =
keeping the materials in the bags.
Any ideas or plans would be very much appreciated.

Hi Randy,
I think if you build them of Wood, it would be nice to have
a primary, heavy, milar or some tough plastic bag as is
larger than the bag in which the Chemicals themselves come
in ( or will be still kept in?)
The larger, tougher sorts of so called Contractor's Clean up
Bags would be a good choice maybe.
This would keep the chances good, that no chemicals would
get into the Wooden bins, where later they would be tedious
to clean up.
Another notion as comes to mind, would be to use the plastic
bins as have tight fitting lids. Many kinds of Stores sell
them, Sewing-Supply Stores, Department Stores and so on.
They come in sizes appropriate for fifty-pound amounts, or
much more even. And these may be set into the Wooden Bins as
may be to keep them nicely organized. These would be easy to
wash out if need arose, and would of course keep any
Chemicals from the Wood proper.

Morning Randy
Many years ago I made 3 storage bins for 50lb bags of chemicals. Each one
holds two bags and are on casters. They fit under an 8 ft table that is
used for glaze making/glazing. On glazing days two can be pulled out and
spanned with a hollow closet door and become another surface to hold work.
They are made of 2x4's , lapped joints, 5/8 - 3/4 plywood bases, 1/4 "
plywood divider that slots into 2x4's. I used some old pine 1x12's to do
sides and backs ( because I had it ) I keep the full bags in a heavy
plastic bag which is closed over open bag of materials. Keeps down dust or
foreign materials from getting into chemicals but more importantly - close
each one after weighing out that ingredient and then not mistakenly
measuring out the same ingredient again. They move easily. Still
strong/tight/straight etc after close to twenty years of use.
If this is of interest, I could send you pictures and measurements. MarjB

My setup works for me, but thats because I have limited space in my glazing
studio. For the 50# bags I have shopping carts. About 5-6 bags of EPK, Silica,
Neph Syn. etc. are kept in the carts which allows me to move them around to
get out of the way when I'm not mixing glazes. It also keeps them off the floor.
When I'm not using them I cover the bags with a large sheet of plastic. I
also have a very large metal shop cabinet (I acquired this for $20 when a machine
shop went out of business) with big deep drawers that I keep the smaller bags
in. When I'm mixing glazes I pull open the drawers and I have all the
chemicals in the original bags. This cabinet also houses my cones/bars, hoses for air
guns, parafin wax, press molds, sponges, glaze tests, and misc. glazing
items.
On a side note: I purchase plastic ladles and spatulas for my glazes. I keep
them inside the glaze buckets (one for each glaze). Since they are plastic,
they don't rust and I'm not forever rinsing my stirring and dipping devices to
use in different glazes. Also check out the newspaper regularly for businesses
that are going out of business. I've gotten wonderful, durable and heavy
tables that work great for work tables and wedging. I just cover a piece of plywood
with canvas and attach it to the table tops. I've also gotten durable
shelving and work cabinets from "out of business" sales.

If you can afford them, Rubbermaid Roughneck "garbage
cans" or lidded large pails - actually somewhere in
between (sorry I don't know actual capacity) are
great. Depending on ingredient, they hold a lot, in
the bag and keep the bag upright. They're imprevious
to almost everything particularly water and can be
recyled to other uses.
