Given the choice between:
A. $100 purchase price with a $50 rebate "guarantee", or
B. $75 purchase price with no rebate.
I believe most people would choose A because they think its a better
deal.
For the seller;
1000 people choosing A, with only 20% getting the rebate is:
$100 X 1000 - ( 20% X 1000 X 50 ) = $90,000
1000 people choosing B is:
$75 X 1000 = $75,000.
Most sellers would prefer A as well.
And, of course the government isn't interested in stopping this. Here
in Washington you will pay about 9% in sales tax on that $50 rebate, or
$4.50. In effect reducing the rebate to $45.50. I don't think most
people think about that part.
So, when you come to my place, I will sell you a pot for $100 (plus
8.9% tax) and give you a handwritten receipt and rebate coupon for $50.
But you will have to mail the coupon to me from your own postal
station( $0.37 + envelope). We will then dicker about the validity of
the coupon and the receipt (I will have a smile on my face) and
eventually I will send you the $50. The state will have gotten their
$4.50. And the post office and telephone company will have gotten a
chunk too. Your net will probably be something like $40.
In the mean time I will have been collecting interest on your $50.
So, why don't potters do rebates? Makes business sense to me !!

Hi all...
Too, I cannot concieve how any outfit or producer or

corporation schmucks, who
have any

will, or a posture of a pretense of it even, would issue
'rebate' vouchers or coupons for their sorry-assed pandering

for a Straight-Price, and save the poor sap or sapess (

nonsense, and, the ingratiating clip jive gouge of the
unctuous anxious could-care-less-if-you-dropped-dead

Why encourage the bastards with your dough?
Why demean yourself?
Why patronize being screwed and pandered to and enticed to
go through silly, demeaning, arbitrary hoops?
Is it because they have trained you that well?
"Here Boy! Here Boy!!!"
Like that?
If I was boss, I'd run them bastards through a replay of the
Nuremburg Trials...
Oh yes indeedy...!
I say...better you be, and happier too, to take 37 cents of
that dough and buy a nice "KWANZA" Stamp at the
unitedstatespostoffice,
and send a Christmas Card to poor old ( non-plussed of
'consumer' sap himself, math whiz, amateur chemist,
electonic's gismo maker, didn't get many 'dates' but made
'Model Airplanes' instead, manifesto-writin', naive
ontologist and self defeating screw-up, ) Kazinski,
languishing as we must suppose he is, in the perpetual
slammer...and, make it a 'Hallmark" too... ya know? "When
you care enough to give the very best"...? He did...or in
his own way, anyway...'Gave his Best', which is more than
you can say for the corporations as issue these absurd
demeaning 'rebates' to get you to make yourself small and
silly, degraded and bend-over-had...
Naive as he was in some ways, at least he had their number,
and played 'em back to themselves a little bit...AND nailed
a few 'innocent' others too...
Here, let me dab the corner of my eye with a Hanky a
moment...
Okay...
How many die from the dalcon shield and hundreds of other
sorry 'sold' things...? Any idea? You been keepin' track
have ye?
'Mustang and Pinto Gas Tank'..? (Oh, fifty, seventy times
the deaths
attributed to old Mr. "K", easy...)
Own a 'ford' do ye? They "Had a better idea" did they? "Who
loves ya baby"?
As consumers...were they 'innocent' ?
Anybody do time for any of tens of, nay HUNDREDS of
Thousands of deaths from
corporations deciet and marketing ruthlessness?
Two hundred and eighty thousand iatrogenic and related
'accidental' deaths caused my (EXPENSIVE) medical (read
'corporations') attentions
each year here? (Actually a lot more, but that's the
official number I think...)
Anybody do any time for that?
Nope?...(do not send them a card then...or, send it
"Postage-Due" maybe...)
So...
"Rebates" indeed...!
Humbug!
Bah !!!!

Brimming with Yuletide cheer, and, in Christmas reveries and

Hi Phil,
They don't do this for one very simple reason. Only 10-20% of the
people actually send in the rebate--even ones for as much as $100. And
then, of course, they can deny them if they aren't letter perfect. So
at the point of sale the company can convince you you are getting a
bargain when you really aren't--unless you follow up and they process
the rebate honestly. It's unethical bordering on fraud in my opinion,
but of course it is entirely legal and becoming increasingly common.
Just another sign of the "get what you can, any way you can" generation
that now seems to be in charge.

John

Well Frank...
It is like those 'Jordan Almonds'...
The Sugar-Candy Coating kind of compliments the nice nutty
flavor...(or is it the other way around?)
But you are right, the nutty flavor would be fine on it's
own too...
Happy Holidays -
Merry Christmas...!
