Dear Clayarters,

I knew many years ago that the residents of Michigan were great supporters
of the arts. That was why we moved here from Ohio. I belong to an
organization called ArtServe Michigan and their newsletter keeps us as
artists informed about the workings of the budget. It has all been iffy and
we have been asked to write to the Legislature and Governor to urge them to
not cut the arts from the budget. Our latest news letter had the following
headline!!!

HISTORY, ARTS AND LIBRARIES SPARED BUDGET CUTS HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ADVOCATES

The final version of HB 4367 as passed by the Legislature and sent to the
Governor, which makes an additional $12 million in cuts to the state budget
does not include any cuts at all to the Department of History, Arts and
Libraries.

We are so fortunate to have elected a governor who realizes the importance
of the arts and humanities to the people of Michigan. Kudos to the artists
who responded.

So happy to report good news in this subject. With the recovering economy,
let us hope that the arts will survive and prosper everywhere.

Warm regards and very happy holidays to all, Bonnie Staffel, Charlevoix
