Thanks Dave, Earl and Ron for your responses and suggestions. I will try them when I fire again.

Elzbieta,

The mattes I tried from Mastering Cone 6 are Variegated Slate Blue, Bone, and Spearmint. Bone and Spearmint both turned out transparent. Bone was more yellow than I expected, though it is not bad as a liner inside things. Spearmint turned out a dark, transparent green that I did not like at all. Variegated Slate actually had spots that were slightly matte. This matte was more pronounced on a darker clay that I have.

I tried refiring them in a bisque load. I fired to cone 04. Bone was still yellow, but a rough yellow. Spearmint turned a light, very matte, green, that was also sort of rough but rather pretty. Variegated Slate Blue turned a light matte blue that I really like on the flower pot I put it on. I had Glossy Base II on the insides of some of the pieces I refired and there were bubble craters in some of the pieces. That really surprised me, that it would happen at Cone 04. I thought I might try it again at a lower temperature, maybe Cone 018 or there about.

I have not tried these colors in the glossy base, but I plan to eventually. I was thinking about using lower amounts of colorant with an opacifier, just to see how it looks.

Incidently, I refired a piece with Bright Sky Blue with that same bisque load. This is a color that seems a bit too bright to me. It turned a really pretty matte blue that was still smooth to the tough. Bright Sky blue also looks pretty on the rim of pieces dipped in Licorice.

I use a stoneware that is just off-white. Licorice on this clay is a lovely, shiny black. I like to put Licorice in the inside and dip the outside in Floating Blue or Variegated Slate Blue, though I think Licorice and Floating Blue like each other best.

Hi Mary,

Are you firing only to large cone 6 almost tip touching AND slow
cooling? These glazes will do just what you describe if they are not
slow cooled.

John
