I hope to enlist the clayart group in helping us find a new ceramics lab
tech / artist in residence.

The Nottingham Center for the Arts in So. California has a very good
facility for ceramics. Lots of kilns, clay mixers, slab rollers, glaze
room, etc. All this has been dormant for several months as we don't
have a ceramist to oversee the place.

What we want is a dedicated/talented ceramist who is knowledgeable in
all aspects of clay and glazes, who wants a place to work on their
career as an artist while helping out with keeping the ceramics
facilities going and be part of a great group developing the art center.

We provide studio space, full use of the facilities, residence,
materials, and all utilities.

The center has a complete ceramics set up with new soldner mixer, full
glaze lab, lots of gas and electric kilns for just about any type of
firing imaginable, lots of different wheels ( Thomas Stuart, Soldner,
Lockerbee, Pacifica, and many others), two large slab rollers, lots of
studio space, and acres of land.
In addition we have a full range of glass facilities and artists from
cold glass to a full hot glass blowing shop.
We also have a complete woodworking shop.

I'm asking you all to spread the word to colleges and friends about this
opportunity. I am putting adds in Ceramics Monthly and Clay Art, but
this list is far more immediate and covers most of the ceramics
community. Please have folks contact me at:

Your help is appreciated.

Hoping all of you are having a wonderful Christmas,

Terry Sullivan

Terry: I send you an email answering this letter. Also a large envelope through priority airmail. I have not had an answer so far. Have you received them?

Marilu
I have been struggling somewhat with whether to post this
As an ex resident and one who has talked to others who
have come and gone since my own time there..
I would not give Nottingham in San Marcos California
a good rating in terms of it's treatment of residents
and degree of professionalism in operation.
I regret to say this, but it has been a bad situation in the past
even though Terry can make attractive initial offers .
All agree the place is a good physical facility and has 'potential'.
That 'potential' is what has always drawn people in, especially in our
profession, where jobs and studio space are often scarce.
.
There are some who may speak positively on Terry's behalf,
but there is also a good size list of those who had an extremely
negative experience there .
I cannot attest to the current atmosphere there,
and it is always difficult to assess from a long distance
but to someone who is considering relocating, as I did
Please use your best common sense, pay attention to red flags
ask specific questions and for specific terms and get it in writing.

I really do not like to be the bearer of negative messages
but I do feel a sense of resposibility to offer reference in this case
and I take responsibility for my statements.

sincerely
