Keisha, I understand that there is a hesitency whenever approaching an unknown but, shucks just do it. Here's a couple exercises I've used in handbuilding classes.

1. A flat high bas relief mural is an easy place to start. First timers to clay are always very successful with this approach. Make it abstract or realistic. Mountains or buildings or just shapes.

2. Make 3 or 4 cylinders, different heights and diameters.

3. Get a spring (like ones on screen doors or on a spiral notebook). Stretch it to cut off a slice of clay. Look at that neat ripple. Manipulate or cut that piece into wavy or flat shapes.

4. Make funny twisty shapes to manipulate into the suggestion of heads or arms or funny hats.

5. Or make abstract geometric flat shapes.

5. Put on a blindfold to attach stuff or work entirely without sight.

Any of these and other approaches can help stimulate a new way to look at the same old stuff, clay, in a new way.

6. If you're a righty, use your left hand only (or vice versa)
