I've always been confused by this. How can anybody get into your
account just by having its number? Aren't other things needed, like a
pin number or a password if it is web based. I mean, all checks have
the account number written on the bottom. Can anybody withdraw from your
account by using the number on your check?

Hi Lee,

If they are clever...and if your account aggreement has no
provision for denying unexpected out-going Wire or
electronic transfers...

Then..."Yes"...yes indeed...

One good one, as some used to do, was to have their own
special Account number on look-alike Deposit Memos or
Deposit Slips on bank island counters, tables or whatever...

People come in lacking their own deposit slip, use the ones
in the stack there with the other kinds of slips and so
on...and...the deposit is creditied to the Account number on
the piece of paper...

Anyway...

Endless little things...

...sigh...

YES! With the computers of today you can print checks with anyone's account
number on them, and using a fake ID clean them out.
Also certain dealers will take a check by phone. I think this should be
illegal. At least with a credit card you are better protected.
If you get the wrong dumb bank teller you can also convince him/her that it
is your spouse/parent, acquire a "counter check" and receive money that way.
We had this happen last week by a guy who was actually the woman's soon to
be ex. He just happened to have her SS# and bank account number and gave the
teller a hard luck story. He wasn't even on the account.
Working in a bank I figure the ones who raise the most stink to my verifying
their ID and information just might be doing something wrong. Otherwise they
appreciate us guarding their funds and don't mind proving it's really them!
So when the teller or cashier asks to see ID produce it willingly and
gladly. They are not out to harass you. They are just making sure it's you
so only you can gain access to your money.
