I've known this domain as a place to find, well, cereal. aka tools for
computer hackers. So it's not just clay, although that can be hacking
too, or .to.

There are various threads about whether .to is a "rogue domain" and
years ago Wired had an article about this
http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,4396,00.html Basically it
would seem .to benefits from an "open-door" policy. After many years,
Tonic Corporation remains the domain registry.

Because it is available?
Mashiko.com and mashiko.net were taken so I bought
Mashiko.org. I use .org for my email addresses and will also use it for
my main web page. But on further investigation, I learned that .org is
not for commerce. I bought mashiko.us for commerce. The rules on the
.us domains, is that you are either supposed to live in the USA or be a US
citizen. Commerce is allowed on them.
I've changed all my domains to godaddy.com They are inexpensive
and are set up so you can manage your domains easily at their web page.
The big thing I noticed when I changed to godaddy.com, is that my spam to my
forwarded addresses fell way off. I heard that the old company that I
dealt with sold your information to be used by spammers.

Daniel,
I don't pay for mine its a basic freebie. Got it up about 8 years
ago I used Geo Cities to host
my page and use V3 for the free domain and forwarding .

Hi Daniel,
I don't really know why .to
I'm piggy backing on Ian's site.
I believe that Ian's son Hamish, who is a programmer, organised the
domain selection.
If Ian is currently on the list, maybe he can tell us.
I'm afraid that I'd be just guessing.
When I looked into getting my own domain name I thought that
was a very good domain name,
but the .sh domain (St Helena) was the most expensive one I came across.
at Au$360 per year for rego only, hosting extra. No way!
The name is not that good
Best wishes
