the kiln that wasn't

Premature happy New Year's to everyone...

OK, so I'm back from the family vacation, and it's time to get down to the
nitty gritty of making final plans and calculations for my new kiln. Went
through the Nils Lou book, the Olson Kiln Book, the Rhodes kiln book, and
probably one or two others...

What I learned was that my old kiln was an impossibility, that it just
won't work according to the formulae in the books. Not enough BTUs, inlet
ports way too big, home made burners all wrong, hard brick interior, soft
brick exterior...the numbers just don't add up...

...EXCEPT, the damn thing fired great and great pots came out of it. Now
that I'm trying to "do the right thing" so it will satisfy the inspectors,
I'm totally confused. Do I follow the rules, or just keep breaking them?
I've already kind of figured out the answer, but it's kind of interesting
to speculate on. What I'll probably do is extrapolate a new set of rules
for my kiln based on the old one...and compose a long and detailed email to
Marc Ward so that he will be ready for my off the wall ideas, and not just
give me formulaic answers...

...to be continued...

Compromise...satisfy the inspectors, but break the rules. That's
what I did, but I don't have to worry about the inspectors.

Richard -
You might want to communicate with Michael McDowell as you go through this
process. He just completed a downdraft gas car kiln that I designed, and he
did the whole thing by the book under the watchful eyes of the planning
commission and building inspectors. You can see his kiln at his website -
