Something I recall about rinsing ash at my teacher's workshop:
At the first rinse, only that part of the mixed solution that will
siphon off with the mixed water is used. The heavy part, that contains
a lot of silica, is discarded. What is used is something like terra sig
and it is screened through an 80mesh sieve before being put in the rinsing
drum.
