Tony -
For Michael McDowell's kiln design, I just used MS Paint. It is simple to
use, and I got good results. It will not do perspective views, but for
straight-on views it works very well. You can see one of the plan views at
Michael's website at http://www.mcdowellpottery.com. If you decide to use
it I can give you a few suggestions.
Best wishes -

CorelDraw, Illustrator, FreeHand - you can probably get an older version on
eBay cheaper than buying new, and the functionality you would need would be
there.

CorelDraw is easy to learn and inexpensive if you buy version 9.

Tony,
Although it is not a 2d drawing package, Rhino is an excellent
(for the money), 3d modeling software. It is user friendly and
not too difficult to learn. You would model your kiln
and then be able to print out direct orthographic or perspective views.
I would only suggest this for someone who might be interested
in taking 3d modeling a little further. I often model pieces before I
begin making them in clay to help me visualize proportions. It is
then easy to create templates from the math model if needed.
This software can be purchased for as little as $200 if you are a
student or know an educator who will purchase it for you. It runs on
pcs.
Also, Rhino can translate models into a format that can be used to create
a rapid prototype model.
Warm regards, Rebecca, just back from the detroit auto show.

Depends on how much money you want to spend! From "0" to "~". There's
all kinds. Some are freebies, others shareware, others are low end yet
decent ...but you must buy at your local computer store, and then there
is the really top end stuff. I use Auto-Cad 2000 for some drawings, and
Illustrator for others, just depends on the nature fo the drawings.
Auto-Cad is best for true, professional-like, shop drawings. But it is
pricey ... like near three grand. There are some more simple drawing
programs that can be had by way of the computer stores. I just happened
to have access to the Auto-Cad.
Best,

Tony, at work I do our engineering diagrams (I am NOT an engineer) on Visio
Technical for Windows. Its not cheap, I bought it about 3-4 years ago for I
think $300. I have no engineering background, and yet even I can figure out how
to use this professional program. It has CAD file compatibility and CAD quality
drawing capabilities. The description on my software box (am I the only one
who saves these?) says:
-Space plans and facilities management
-Process plant designs
-Building and industrial control drawings
-Electrical engineering schematics
-Mechanical engineering drawings
The program uses SmartShape symbols that are a "collection of lines, arcs,
and circles. The 4,000 parametrically driven shapes in Visio Technical are
programmed to behave like their real-world counterparts - bolt shapes act like
bolts, door shapes act like doors, and so on...Customizing existing shapes to suit
your needs or create your own from scratch using Visio Technical drawing
tools."
I even used this program to design and build my raku kiln 8 years ago. I was
able to draw and copy each and every brick used and designed my own burners.
The end result was exactly as I "drew" it on my computer, to scale. However,
this program may be overkill for what you want to do and there might be
something on-the-shelf you could get at a computer software store that would also be
less expensive.
Good luck!

Hey Tony: I've used Adobe Illustrator. It works great. You can create a
brick and then use that template over and over, for brick paterns. I'm
not that good at the program but it is pretty intuitive.

Hi Tony,
I use Ashlar Vellum "draft" 2D and "Graphite" 2D/3D. Cad program for
drawing kiln plans in my business. They are very good. I used to use
Claris Cad before that, a decade ago. It wasn't as good.
The draw back is that Ashlar stuff is very expensive, unless you have
some work for it.
I believe that there are share ware drafting programs around, but if
they are free, they probably arn't that good.
Best wishes
