just wanted to add a bit of information about
pricing and kurt wild's pots. i have had two clayarters
write me and scold me for being too commercial, and
wondering about what is a thousand dollar pot.

that entire post was about one's perception of value.
it came from tom sawyer's post about perceived value
of work, and value of artist.
if the dollar value is not present, where does one start?
do we give away our work? do we get grants and let
the community support us? what makes artists think
that we are somehow owed a living? that is total bs.
social welfare. of course there are a great many folks
in this `new world` that think that `it is someone else's
responsibility to support them`. never them...and, everything
is someone else's fault. i do not live in that world. responsibility
starts at home.

anyway.

kurt uses soluble salts on very complex designs. it takes
him 20-30 hours to scratch the design in an average pot
he creates. his large pieces are perhaps 30 inches high, and
very round. by the time he grids the pot, makes the design/pattern/
transfers the design, then scratches the entire pot to make the
design...he has 40 hours of work in the pot...that does not
count the time for bisque, glaze firing...packing...shipping.
at 1500 bucks, he is still not making very much. but, for the
first time...he almost makes a living wage. he also is one that
does not consider having others take care of him. he does
it alone. thank god.
