Dear Friends,
When I was firing Salt Glaze I used the traditional draw trials to check =
the progress of my work. I relied neither on the pyrometer nor the cones =
to assess the end point of a firing. Cones informed me of the required =
maturity of my clay and the pyrometer the rate of heating. to I regard =
both as unreliable indicators of the progress of glaze build up.
Since information needed to determine the progress of chemical reactions =
within either a salt kiln or a soda kiln is either unknown, undetermined =
or concealed, arguments are moot and possibly unnecessary.
These are processes where Empiricism Rules.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia
