Hi List,
Very many thanks to those who posted advice (all female ?)
Sadly my brief is very specific and is limited to one 90 min session =
with each class from age 4, 5,and 6. I have to get them to make a pinch =
pot, decorated with Viking patterns.=20
It's not my idea, I'm just the hired hand.

If it is of any help to anyone else, here is the skeleton of my lesson =
plan:

1. Introduction.
Pat the potter, what does a potter do?
2. Materials.=20
What have you played with before that you can squeeze and shape?=20
3.What is clay?
Come up and feel a bucket of mud, a bucket of dry found clay, a bucket =
of moist clay and a feel in a bucket of slip.
Wash hands. Where clay comes from.
5. Use small ball of clay provided to impress name, with assistance, =
using alphabet spaghetti.=20
N.B. Use these later, with surname and class ref. on reverse as =
identification, fired inside each childs pot, they get to take home name =
.
4. What happens when you've made it.
Show examples of fired clay.
Describe firing. 4x mums oven e.t.c.
5. Working in groups of 4 (each with a parent assistant)=20
make a list of things that are made of clay that you might use or find =
at home. Make class list.
6. Discuss pattern, what is a pattern? examples shown.
7. Look at the "tools" you have been asked to bring in, what patterns =
can you make with them? Draw.
8.Why Vikings needed pots. Discuss in groups.
9. Make class list.
10. Demonstration pinch pot.
11. Group "Air pinch pots"=20
12. Children to make pinch pots, with assisstance where necessary.
13. Demonstration of carefully decorating pots with contemporary found =
objects.
14.Children to decorate their pots , with assisstance as necessary.
15. Group exhibition at end of class.
16. Group firing of class 1,2,and 3 in pit dug at school with parental =
help.
17. Pit firing opening barbeque and party for parents and pupils.
18. Countywide exhibition of KS1 and KS2 Viking work at Norwich Castle =
Museum, Easter 2004.=20
19. Exhaustion of third party.

Knowing that you're the hired hand and not the originator of this
project, how much can you depart from the syllabus? Not to be an
iconoclast or potoclast here, but why restrict the kids to pots? Also,
what they know about Vikings seems important here. Maybe someone would
want to make a Viking helmet or a Viking boat or oar, breastplate,
mead, runes, necklace, bowl, spear, mother and child, Viking
patterns.... Does the end-exhibition absolutely require pinch pots? Can
4-6 year olds handle patterns?
