The protection tube has broken off of my OxyProbe. The center rod, platinum
wire, etc is fine. In fact, it is happily taking readings in a firing as I
type this. I have tried cementing the tube back on using a high temperature
ceramic cement but it lasts for one firing then falls off in the next. The
original cement is an opaque white, whereas what I am using is a transparent
yellow-green.
I have ordered a new protection tube from Axner's but they don't know what
to use to glue it on with. Anyone out there know what to use for this
application?

Results from the celadon glaze tests yielded two promising glazes, but both
with crazing. Firing variations today with petalite to lower expansion. Also
had some glorious hints of opalescence in the first batch - almost glowing.
So this batch has some tiles with variations on bone ash.
Wish us luck.

Dear Bruce;
I wonder if "Magic Mend" for repairing porcelain and stoneware bisque
would work? I got some stuff from Nils that worked a charm, but forget
the name. Write Nils maybe?

I think that the tube is essential to make the probe work accurately
as it is supposed to get some outside air to the element at the end.
There used to be a company called Sauereisen I dealt with 18 years
ago and they are still around. See
http://www.sauereisen.com/
They make a line of about 20 different ceramic cements that will
take temperature above 2000 deg. F .
The top end of the tube is probably not going to go above 1000 deg.
We used to use Sauereisen to cement bases onto quartz arc lamps that
got plenty hot- lamps used in TV studios to illuminate the set. It
comes in rather large cans. Like all these kinds of products getting
a small amount is hard. They have quart size samples for trial.
Axner ought to buy a can and repackage it in one ounce packages once
you decide on the right one. Probably a phone call to the Sauereisen
Co. would get some one who can pick a likely one out of their large
number of choices.
