I have recently started applying small tightly rolled handles to some of my
pots for decoration.
When the clay is rolled into the shape I want it has a tendency to crack and
even split on top of the roll. I have tried wetting the clay to make it
softer but when it is wet and then rolled it gets all distorted and messes
up any decorative markings or various shapes I have put on the handle.
I have seen a lot of pots with these small rolled up handles, so what is
the best method for doing this with out making a mess of everything???

Hi Gene,
Logan J. here. Well, I'm not quite sure what your looking for but I have two ways that have worked for me when dealing with handles. I either pull them ,
( like for coffee cups & casseroles) or when I make minature tea / coffee cups
I use a pastry bag with the right size tip & a piece of heavy plastic. To do this
I make A slurry of the thickest slip that will still go through the pastry bag &
pipe the shape I want for the handle onto the plastic. When it dries enough to handle
I use wet fingers to get rid of the flat spot & attach the same way you would any handle.
two tips, # 1: Make sure you get ALL the air bubbles in your bag before starting.
#2: Use an electric hand mixer to make the slurry as SMOOTH as possable. it won't clog the tip if you do this. I've done this on a few childrens tea sets with no failures
connected to the handles. TEST TEST TEST!!! Good luck!!

Hello Gene
Before you roll the clay into a rounded coil you must moist it slightly
around.

Hello Gene:
In my work I make a lot of little attachements and for me the easiest
solution for cracking was to keep my hands and the surface I am rolling the
clay on a bit damp(not wet).
I hope it works for you
