cut off wires (from [fwd: re: clay tools])

Dear Taylor;

I stand confirmed as a metal head by my Doorless Fiber Kiln and my
tools, so yes....I braid stainless steel wire. I buy s.s. 'ligature
wire' , which is soft-annealed and takes a twist marvellously. It is
primarily used in dentistry (braces, etc) and surgery (the finer
gauges). I get mine from a company I found on a google search for s.s.
ligature wire, and I purchase it in .010 through .020 inch diameters
for my WireTools and CutOff Wires.

I intend to order samples of heavier wire for special duty in my
WireTools....... Lee convinced me to try this.

Good Luck, Hank

Lee and other metal heads:

Have you tried braiding the stainless wire? I have braided fishing line
and found it to be fantastic cut off wire. It gives a very beautiful
pattern to the bottom of pots, very bold. At the moment I have only
used three lines to braid, but I bet using more would result in
differing amounts of patterning.

I didn't try for a very tight braid with the fishing line. The three
lines guarantee a different profile between the top and the bottom of
the cut. This helps to prevent that cut from re healing and forcing you
to cut again.

The only thing I find that I do not like about the fishing line is the
stretching it does especially with bases that have gone firmer. If I
knew that I could braid metal cut off wire in the same way, I might try
that as an alternative.

Let me know if you try it.

Taylor, in Waco

I don't know if these pliers are easily available to me here in
Japan. What I've always done, is put one end of a pair of wires into
the chuck of a drill and then hold the other end stationary. This
gives a uniform twist to the wire.

Back home I used trolling stainless steel wire. It worked pretty
good. My more recent wire came from the 100yen store and it is
imported from Korea. =20

ive been making braided cut off wires for a while.. When ever i teach a class
thats the first thing i do is make cut off wires for all ..i use a blob of
clay to hold the wire with a attached cork and use the wheel ,, another use for
a potters wheel

I use stainless wire and wine corks,, drink wine save the corks ,, i like to
recycle,,

once is not enough.. recycle

Im getting ready for a workshop at Marco Island for a week.. i will bring my
wire and corks,, i sure hope its going to be warmmmmmm

Hi Taylor, My original experience was with stainless steel trolling
line, braiding 2 lines. My stainless was very stiff and it was best
twisted by putting one end in an electric drill. My current
stainless is from the 100yen store, made in Korea. It is a little soft
and doesn't hold its shape as good as the trolling wire does.

I'll have to take a photo of the wire I made influenced by the
online photo that started this topic. I twisted two lines and took the
twisted line and wrapped it tightly around a bamboo skewer. This
makes something that looks like a spring. You then pull the ends
and stretch the spring into a spiral. You end up with an aggressive
wire like in the photo. It is holding its shape better than my
single coiled wire. You end up with deep cuts with shallow cuts on the
raised areas of the clay. I am using it in the handle of my "Hank's
tool." I'll take a photo of the wire and the pattern it makes.
