Dear Gene Arnold ,
As I understand your description you are rolling clay under your palms =
against your bench to make long strands of thin clay.
If this is so, you are drying your clay in two ways. First the heat from =
your hands is evaporating water from the surface of your clay. Second, =
the bench will adsorb water from you clay. The effect is to make your =
clay short.
This can be cured by having a plywood or similar board about A3 size to =
which smooth canvas has been attached with a water proof adhesive. In =
use, you would dampen the canvas with a sponge making sure the surface =
was not "awash". Roll out your strands of clay on this surface. As your =
hands dry the surface of your the canvas will re-moisten it.
Best regards,
