The Online Museum of Crystalline Glazed Wares

online one for crystal addicts. Please take a look; new
exhibitors are always welcome! Contact me for more info.

People are asking frequently enough about tips for web site design.

In my opinion:

Well, this site is an example of some of the things I think are pretty bad. and would advise NOT TO DO. http://crystallieri.org

First of all, IT IS  S - L - O - W. Maybe they don't have funding for a decent host, but surely they can do better. I'm on a T-1 so I have very fast access, I can't imagine what it would be like on dial up.

Considering how slow it is to load, by the time the first page finally displays, then you have to click to go into the site. This, to me, is the height of bad UI design (downright stupid I want to say!). I'm there. 9 times out of 10 it's not due to a random accident but because I followed a link from a search engine or some other site's reference to it. I WANT TO BE THERE. I WANT TO GO IN. Making me click again to display the real first page is annoying. (Now, I could have taken this better in stride if the pages were a bit snappier. But then again, it is a pet peeve...)

Can't reach the webmaster or anyone to complain to them directly. Here's how the link shows up:

You can reach the curator of the Online Museum of Crystalline-Glazed Ceramics by emailing curator <at> crystallieri <dot> org"

I guess no one checked what it would look like in the flesh. This is just too much to bear. HTML is not that hard to write. So rather than a hyperlink that brings up my e-mail client with a new message started and already addressed, I am supposed to walk my start menu to open my e-mail client, click again to create a new message and type this (convoluted and very difficult to type) address in by hand. No, I am not about to do that. IT SHOULD HAVE HANDLED THIS FOR ME. Rather, I'm off on a rant. I have the attention span of a gnat. I think a lot of us do when it comes to web browsing. The result is that even if they have great material written and pictures of great works on site, I'll never know. Not a place I will go back to. It didn't make my favorites list and I am really, really into crystalline glazes! It's a disappointment.

I guess I should be thankful that they didn't have music or video....

A most exasperated,

Hi Susan,

I didn't notice a particular performance problem. Pages loaded ok.

As to the UI - the site has many "issues" it seems. Oh well. The pots are
nice. I really like the iron, rutile, nickel piece.

Thanx
D

Hello Susan

I wish every site would be that slow!

There is a logic to make it slow ( which is not)

Do you know how long it takes to fire the crystals?

Greets, all,

I'm not able to spend much time on the new site or in writing here,
but I found the pages to load extremely quickly. I have a cable
modem connection, which is quite a bit slower than T-1s I use, but
I'm comparing this to other sites. This is in the top 5% of
speedily-loading sites. Well, maybe 6%.

Perhaps you, Susan, your system, local network, or your ISP, were
having other issues?

Oh... the pots are stunning, Fa, but you already knew that.

Regards,
Maurice

Susan wrote about this site and I both agree & disagree. I have it in
my favorites but even when I linked from your email it opened right up.
I am on the computer at work which is fast. I do agree about the intro
page, why not just take me to the home page and the work. What I found
slow to load were the graphics of the work. I also agree about the
email address, I wouldn't bother.
By the way I love the quote after your signature. Do you do a
different one each time?

Lucy Lee et al,

I think I was having a bad day at work when I wrote that this afternoon. I actually thought I deleted it and am surprised that I obviously hit send. Those poor people don't deserve my rath, I'm sure they are doing the best they can. At home, after class, and totally mellowed out - the pages do load faster but I will stand by my comments about about the UI.

No, I don't change the quote every time. I adore Picasso, always have and I very much agree with the point this statement expresses. Perspective. Point of View. Very important stuff. I'm sure I will change it at some point when something else comes along and strikes my fancy. Glad you enjoy it for now!

Out of curiosity I clicked on your link and the pages loaded quickly --=20=

no problems there. Some nice looking crystalline glazes, my favorite=20
being a cone 6 version on the inside of a bowl (lovely).

Someone worked very hard to show lovely pics of crystalline glazes and=20=

I think it's worth the visit. (The site's creator is rather incognito.)

Fara Shimbo is the person to praise or blame, depending on your take
on this issue.

Bill, in "finally it's sunny" Fredericksburg, VA where we're finally
getting over the snow/ice storm of Sunday/Monday/Tuesday. My cat
who's had the blues for days is sitting in the sun with a great big
grin. Yes, grin - cats do grin you know.

When I explain to people about crystal glazing I say: You load half kiln it takes much
longer. The firing day you must be around all day. In the end 30% success is great.
