bad websites, splash pages, and oh yeah, content...

Good morning, all,

I have been reading all the postings about Crystallieri.Org.
I would to address some of the issues raised.

Why does this site have a splash page?
--Because it's a museum, and I thought a splash page might
serve as a proper introduction. I don't normally use them
on websites but I thought that it was called for in this
case. Think of it as a signal to slow down, show a little
patience, and be ready to give a some time and consideration
to the exhibitors. They've worked very hard not only to learn
crystalline glazing and take pictures, but to put up with me,
which is not easy.

Why did this site have a pseudo-email address?
Because I have five websites actively working now, some of
which have been active for many, many years. This means my
email addresses have been harvested over and over again and
I get over 400 pieces of spam every day. Most of it gets
filtered out but I still have to check that, because some
legitimate mail gets caught as well. I was hoping to have
just one email box that isn't full of junk. I would like
to give a hearty thanks to Maurice Weitman who sent me a
terrific way to make the mailto: show up and function correctly
in whatever browser you're using without being easily harvested.

Why does the website load slowly for some of you?
No idea. I have fixed wireless service and it loads in a
snap for me. But again, here I have a choice. I can give you
small, compressed pictures that load in a trice if you've got
a slow or excessively busy service, or I can put up bigger,
clearer pictures that do justice to the exhibitors.

Why doesn't it say who the curator is?
Why does it matter? If I ask you, "Whose works are hanging
in the Metropolitain Museum," or "Whose works are in the
MOMA" (at least if you're from New York) you'll know. If
I ask you, "Who's the curator of the Met?" chances are you
won't even care. That's the way, I feel, it -should- be.
I didn't put my name anywhere because it just doesn't matter.
But there is no "they" or "those people;" there is only a
nasty old bat from Brooklyn who does websites to relax.

What does matter, at least to me, is the quality of the work
presented by the various exhibitors. Right now there are
seven, apart from me, and the works they've sent are worth
by far a few seconds wait to view them.

And that's all I have to say on the subject.

Hang in there, everyone,

Fa

I for one want to thank you for giving people a chance to see =
crystalline potters. I feel fortunate that you took the time to put =
this site together. It is an opportunity for some of us who aren't as =
fortunate as to have our own website. We can let people see our work =
and hopefully get some feedback as well. This site allows exposure to =
potters that may not have any other means.
Great work Fara and thank you

I had the same problem with automatic harvesting. There is
a simple, low-tech solution: Don't use a Mailto link.
Instead, display an *image* of your Email address. The
harvesters only understand text, and specifically scan for
Mailto links. If you are concerned that they will get smart
enough to understand images, you can always make it
more difficult by adding a distracting background like
some secure password sites do. But I was able to totally
stop a flow of 150-200 spams per day just by changing
the address and only showing it as a simple GIF.

Just a thought: We're *all* gonna be in trouble when they
start mining the Clayart archives!

Actually, Fa's method of handling the masking of her address from
harvesters was even simpler and lower-tech.

But the complaint about that method was that one could not click on
something to initiate a new, blank message in one's email client.

Uhhh... "they" have been mining clayart archives for several years, it appears.

My momud1 address is only used on clayart, and, despite filtering, I
get many spam messages to that address. I'd say it took about a
month for them to begin.

Maurice
