Brampton Brick just set up a new facility a half hour from me. They produce
300 million bricks per year for new housing in Ontario. This is a seam of
red clay called Queenston shale that stretches from Queenston, NY to just
north of Toronto past a village called Terra Cotta. If a brick weighs 6
pounds then I figure Clayarters would have to work a hellava lot harder than
they do, to go thru 1800 million pounds of clay in a year.
I did a workshop just a few miles from Terra Cotta this past weekend. People
were using Redart!!! Why don't you use Queenston shale from out there in the
ditch. You mean we can! Yeap, just lift up the sod and there it will be in
red bags with yellow lettering.
Potters are not even seen as a market for clay mines.
Funny how peple think the clay is always better on the other side of the
fence- porcelain from England,France, England and now a potter near me is
bringing it in from China.
cheers,
Tony
