Back in 1976 I was three years away from being a Texas resident (a three
year residency) - but I was sleeping on Padre Island nonetheless. I was on
my way to Mexico on a school break from SIU E and thought this would cost
less than a motel. It was less expensive but it was also a surprise to wake
up covered in sand. Today I have learned that gas drilling (an
"aggressive drilling campaign") will be allowed in the Padre Island National
Park. So dear friends in Texas, better get out there and enjoy that
natural treasure before the 18 wheelers start to roll and the ridley
turtles are forced to flee - if a turtle can flee. This was sad news
indeed.
