Hello clayart folks,
In a recent posting to clayart, Lee Love mentioned
someone who was using a computer by talking to it,
That's what I'm doing now. I'm writing this e-mail
using the software, Dragon NaturallySpeaking. It's
a fantastic program!
Speaking of Lee, I would urge you to take a look
at his web site. He and Jean have some wonderful
work. My partner, Darrell and I are proud owners
(or custodians) of one of Lee's yunomi. Shipping
was quick and the packaging was first rate. It's a
sweet little piece that we are enjoying very much.
Receiving Lee's pot had me reminiscing about
a trip I took with a friend to Japan some twenty
years ago. It was a ceramic tour of Japan
sponsored by the Shimpo Company. Did
any of you participate in that trip?
I was very fortunate to be in a workshop
given by Vince Pitelka at Cabrillo College early
in January. He gives a great workshop, so take
advantage of any opportunity to work with him.
Although I am primarily a lurker, I very much
appreciate reading clayart. And Joyce, I am
delighted to be reading your posts once again.
I am sorry for your loss. You contribute
kindness, intelligence and poetry with a capitol
"P". (And I must admit that I felt envy when you
did a plate trade. I could just imagine the
wonderful plates -- what a table setting).
Mel, I had a most wonderful surprise last night.
I finally unpacked the teapot I purchased from
you at workshop at DeAnza College a number
of years ago. It was meant as a gift for someone
else, but I decided that I could not part with it.
Imagine my delight, when I found that I had had
the good sense to purchase one of your shino
bowls too. I wish I hadn't waited so long!
I need to end this post by urging caution when
working with all the materials used in ceramics,
Yes, I am the lady from California who had
exposure to manganese. Have any of you read
the article regarding welding and Parkinson's
Disease in Forbes this week? Also, you might want
to visit: http://www.parkinson.org/shell/websearch.pl
http://www.parkinsonsinstitute.org/movement_disorders/parkinsons.html
Keep informed and make your choices. Obviously,
there are many different opinions regarding
safety. If the emphasis is on not breathing the
fumes, why would we vent kilns and add the toxins
to the atmosphere.
From a lurker with appreciation for clayart and the
generousity of it's members!

mel, that's incredible! Did you write that entire email with Dragon?
The entire thing, including ' "P" ' ? Was it very difficult? I've seen
some output from speech recognition software but it was nowhere near as
good as what you did. You must be an expert trainer, or have a very
distinctive voice, or they've improved the software. Did your really
write that entire email....?

I just caught on that it was Sally who wrote that. (Late night, no tea
yet, show coming) It's incredible. As are Lee's pots!
A friend of mine died ten years ago from Parkinson-related problems. He
always said he would have liked to have held off the disease for five
more years, that the progress was so rapid, but instead he and his wife
succumbed to old-age vanity and finality and that was that.

Where, you ask? Well if you're in the "Daly City" of the Silicon Valley in
California, just walk into your neighborhood Fry's or CompUSA, or other
computer store located on most every street corner. :-)
Or use your browser's search engine to find it at an on-line store.
Naturally Speaking's been around for probably 10 years. Early versions
were "interesting," but pretty poor in recognition (one had to do much
editing of the resulting text). I think the current version is 7--oughta
be vastly improved by now, but since I no longer write term papers I've
lost interest. You might want to do a Google on "review dragon naturally
speaking" to find out what others think.
Another pretty good one (favorably reviewed by Consumer Reports a few years
back) is IBM's Via Voice. I believe that one was developed by Lerner and
Hauspe.

Note to Kathy Forer: Mel didn't write that Nat. Spkg. post. He was
*forwarding* a message from Sally!
