Hi Clarence

There is a book, 10,000 Years of Pottery, by Emmanuel Cooper - sorry I can't
find it right now as I have just moved (yippeee) and am in a state of
cardboard box chaos (groan). My books have to wait until I figure out where to put
them... However, it was published here in the UK a few years ago, and might be
what you have in mind. If you cannot get hold of it through your library, or
any of several other books around that cover pottery history, then there is
also a very good survey by Victor Bryant, on a website:

http://www.victor.bryant.hemscott.net/

Well worth browsing through

Hope this helps.

Here are some other books which I think are quite worthwhile:
1. World Ceramics by Robert Charleston (anthology covering everything
written by experts in each area)
2. The Art of Ceramics, European Ceramic Design 1500-1830 by Howard
Coutts (by far the best book I have found on European ceramics
Renaissance through Neo-Classical)
3. American Ceramics by Garth Clark
4. 20th Century Ceramics by Edmund DeWaal (most comprehensive on
Western Ceramics in the 20th century)
5. Ceramics of the 20th Century by Tamara Preaud (concentrates on
European Ceramics)
6. The Potter's Art by Garth Clark (history of English ceramics)
7. Porcelain Stories from China to Europe by Emerson, Chen, and Gates
(publication of the Seattle Art Museum (currently on sale at E.
R. Hamilton Books)

All of these books are important in giving a good overview of ceramics
in the West.

Does Cooper speak about Jomon pottery?

It looks well laid out, but seems to be incomplete. There is no
mention of Jomon at the introductory "Prehistoric Origins of Pottery."

*I think this book is used in some college programs as a text book.
Someone here may have complained about the technical information
(materials safety), but the first half of the book is a historic
overview of world potter. Even includes mention of Jomon and other
pottery traditions of the world.
