Hello folks,=20
Can anyone shed light on Brown Iron Oxide? Will it give same/similar =
result
to RIO in a brown glaze? I see that Laguna has it listed as a "natural =
Iron
Oxide, reddish brown raw color" It seems quite a bit more brown than RIO =
in
its raw state.
Thanks in advance,=20

I too wondered at this, but have bought and used it with no difference in my glazes.

Hi Robert,
Brown iron oxide could originate for a couple of sources. It could
contain some limonite or ochre. This is hydrated iron oxide.
Brown iron oxide could also be Fe3O4 . This is an oxidation state half
way between the red Fe2O3 ferric oxide and the black FeO Ferrous form.
It could also be a natural mixture of several of the above.
However, the essential point is that you can use any of the different
forms to make iron coloured glazes. Because, in the kiln during the
first 600 to 1000 degrees of oxidised firing, all the different forms
of iron oxide convert to the same red form. That is if your kiln is
firing cleanly.
Best wishes
