I find that if I wait until the pot is dry, a damp sponge will clean the
bottom and make it smoother. However, I don 't use raku clay so there is no
problem with grog.....Mildred Herot

firing some extra fine steel wool, i sign my name and the name of the shop
in each pot with needle tool, this takes it down to a nice clean image and i
can also do the pot bottom,after that if there is glaze to be removed i'm
happy ,thats the only ones i get to keep.

Dear Gordon,
Not a bad tip but watch our for dust if you do this dry.
I think there is a bit of confusion creeping into this tread.
My reading of the original was that it was concerned with fired pots
no green ware.
A person using a heavily grogged stoneware will find that during
firing clay shrinks from around the grog leaving high spots which can
cause serious scratches on any surface it may be dragged across.
As an aside, this differential shrinkage can lead to weeping pots if
the adhesion of vitrified clay matrix to the grog is poor or the
stresses set up in cooling lead to micro fractures.
