raku - pulling from kiln

Hi Simona

I would suggest one or two test pieces to start, depending on the type of
kiln you have. If you have a kiln with a door that you can operate while
holding the piece, they you can probably fire more at one time.

What you might try is "pretend" firing a load. Place several pieces in the
kiln (unglazed), close the kiln, pretend you have reached temperature, then
go through the motions of removing the pieces, using tongs, gloves, etc. as
if they were hot, to get a good feeling for what will happen at the end of a
"real" firing.

I typically fire 3 to 5 pieces, but I have someone available to "lift the
lid" off the kiln as I remove each pieces, so the remaining pieces don't
cool too quickly.

Hi,

I was wondering what people consider a reasonable number of pieces to pull
from the kiln & get into reduction containers if you are working alone? I
realize it varies by the size of the pieces & the person's ability, I'm just trying
to get an idea of where I should start.

Thanks!

......

The biggest variable here is the glaze you are using. If
it is a white crackle, then there is no rush to get it out.
If it is a copper based glaze that needs quick action to
get the best color, then that's a different story. I make
largish pieces, and find that ONE is enough with a copper
based glaze. Timing is everything. With white crackle,
even though the pieces are large, however many I can fire
at one time is how many I do.
